For Kari Lee Castetter, Friday’s 4-H Queen Pageant was “like a dream.”
The 18-year-old Hamilton Southeastern graduate was chosen to reign as queen for 2008.
Visibly trembling and genuinely surprised following the judges’ decision, the Ball State-bound beauty said she is looking forward to the 4-H fair which begins Thursday and following in the footsteps of her predecessor, the 2007 Hamilton County 4-H Queen Erika Obereiner.
“I’m just looking forward to representing Hamilton County and serving as a role model,” Castetter said.
A capacity crowd packed the main exhibition hall at the 4-H Grounds as 22 of the county’s best, brightest and most beautiful young women competed for the title. The judges’ decision came as little surprise to a throng of supporters who screamed and shouted “You’re beautiful Kari,” each time she was introduced.
Castetter is the daughter of Larry and Valerie Castetter. She is a 10-year member of the Progressive Farmers 4-H Club and plans to major in elementary education at Ball State.
Joining Castetter in her court is First Runner-up Victoria Filson, 18. The IU freshman was also chosen as Miss Congeniality. Emily Lehman, 18; Leah Hahn, 18, and Alexandra Robinson, 18, round out the court.
The outgoing queen reminded all contestants that 4-H was about making friends and learning the skills to become future leaders.
“4-H has never been about winning or receiving the blue ribbon,” said Obereiner. “It’s about what you gain along the way.”
