Audience snubbed in ‘Scrubs’ finale

May 9th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Television

Those who tuned in to watch the season/series finale of NBC’s “Scrubs” probably asked themselves what in the world was going on? I know did.

The last episode featured Dr. Cox reciting to his son, Jack, a fairy-tale themed bedtime story of his hectic day at the hospital. For those who missed it, you didn’t miss much.

The show never made much sense - it wasn’t funny, it didn’t take part in the show’s two locations (Sacred Heart Hospital or J.D./Turk’s apartment), it didn’t follow any story lines leading up from previous episodes and most importantly, it wasn’t the true ending. There was no conclusion to the J.D.-Elliot relationship or even for the show or its audience (which apparently NBC cares nothing about).

Dr. Kelso, who retired two episodes early, is somehow the chief of medicine again (which is never explained). Elliott and Keith are still talking about their wedding she called off, when Keith’s character hasn’t been around for over a month. Dr. Cox and Jordan make no reference to their sick daughter, just their son Jack. And the Carla-Turk second baby issue is completely ignored.

So how is this fairy-tale ending supposed to work? It’s not.

Apparently the brass at NBC did not allow the writers to complete the season’s scripts after the writers strike ended. Instead, the so-called “series finale” is just an out-of-place episode, not a true ending.

But “Scrubs” fans do not have to keep this bitter taste in their mouth for too long hopefully. ABC is reportedly in negogiation to pick up “Scrubs” for another full season (18 episodes). This would allow the writers to successfully finish the plots and leave fans with an actual conclusion.

The episode was shown out of order, which is made obvious by the fact that the Chief of Medicine is still on staff, even though he quit two episodes prior. I actually thought it was a rerun when I was watching it. I think the true season finale was the episode where the Chief retired.
